BGA Junior Golf Program Update
President Bermuda Golf Association Craig Brown announced that the Bermuda Golf Association and the Bermuda Golf Foundation are now able to provide an update on plans to restart the BGA Junior Golf program.

Brown said, “As you may be aware, the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of National Security, and the Association of National Sport Governing Bodies created the phased Return to Play Guidance for sports. As the process developed, amendments were made which further delayed our return however we can now safely proceed with Junior Golf.

ASSESSMENT DAY

We plan to start the 2021 BGA Junior Golf program with an assessment day hosted at the Port Royal Golf Course next Saturday, March 13th. The assessment will be for any child between the age of 5 -18 years of age who is interested in the sport of golf. Golf clubs are not required to attend, however, we do ask that you RSVP to reserve a spot. A skill assessment will be mandatory for ALL children wishing to be a part of Junior Golf in 2021, regardless of any involvement with the program previously.

The assessment day will be FREE and will operate under strict Government COVID-19 guidelines, with a maximum of 17 juniors in each age group listed below:

5-8 years of age 10:00am-11:00am
9-11 years of age 11:30am-12:30pm
12-15 years of age 1:00pm-2:00pm
16-18 years of age 2:30pm-3:30pm

- We kindly ask that you RSVP to juniors@bermudagolf.org
- Please state the time slot and how many people (including adults) will be in attendance.
- If your child requires golf clubs for the assessment, please indicate this in your RSVP email.

WHY ASSESS?

The assessment day is an important part of our program and will provide useful benchmarking data on skill level and physical abilities. The data will allow us to assign your junior golfer to the most appropriate golf development pathway for their age, gender and skill set.

LONG TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT

Our new Junior Golf program forms part of the BGA's strategic plan - 'Birth to Podium' - and is based on the scientific principles of Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) with clearly defined pathways for the physical, mental, and emotional development of each junior golfer.

Last term, those whose children participated in the Friday evening novice groups will have seen the introduction of some of these principles with a strong focus on FUNdamental movement skills, such as hand-eye coordination (throwing and catching), locomotion (running, jumping, agility), and object striking (tennis and tee ball).

FRIDAY EVENING NOVICE GROUPS

With the return of daylight savings, we are planning to recommence our Friday evening sessions at Ocean View Golf Course on Friday, March 19th.

SATURDAY LESSONS AND PLAY

Following the assessment day, we will introduce Saturday afternoon lessons and playing options as part of our LTAD player development pathway.

COST

The BGA Junior Golf program options will start at $300 per year and will include junior memberships to Port Royal and Ocean View. The cost for the Friday evening novice groups is $100 per child for 10 weeks.

As the National Sport Governing Body, the BGA is committed to providing opportunities and access for any child that wishes to play golf on the island. On behalf of the BGA board and the Junior Golf subcommittee, we thank you for your interest in golf.

Please feel free to circulate this email to family, friends, colleagues and whomever may be interested in joining the BGA Junior Golf program.
