Alex Noren worked hard on his wedge game and it paid off in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship with a 10-under 61, giving him a two-shot lead among early starters on a calm day at Port Royal Golf Club.
Bermuda golfers Eric West, Scott Roy, Michael Sims, and Oliver Betschart all took to the course.
With barely any breeze, Noren took dead aim and was dialed in. He set a tournament record with 11 birdies, and his 61 broke by two shots his lowest score on the PGA TOUR.
The first round of the 2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship was suspended due to darkness at 5:31 p.m. A.S.T. with three groups still on the course including Sims, and Betschart. The round will resume Friday morning at 7:45 a.m. while the second round will begin as scheduled at 6:50 a.m.
The field of 132 players are playing for a $6.5 million purse and the champion will receive $1.17 million and 500 FedExCup points.
West saw the first to Tee Off, he would complete his round shooting 6-over par 77. West shot 2 Birdies, 9 Pars, 6 Bogey’s, and 1 Double Bogey.
Roy also completed his First Round shooting 6-over par 77. Roy would shoot 1 Birdie, 11 Pars, 5 Bogey’s, and 1 Double Bogey.
Both Sims, and Betschart are 1-over through 15. Sims so far has 1 Eagle, 2 Birdies, 8 Pars, 3 Bogeys, and 1 Double Bogey, while Betschart shot 3 Birdies, 9 Pars, 2 Bogey’s, and 1 Double Bogey’s.
