The 2024/25 Harness Pony Racing Season concluded at the National Equestrian Center on Vesey Street with a day of thrilling races and heartfelt farewells.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the emotional farewell parade for two beloved ponies, Itsallaboutme and A Touch of Red. Both made their final appearance on the track before retiring, marking the end of a distinguished racing careers. The crowd paid tribute to the veteran ponies, acknowledging their contributions to the sport.
The racing action itself was filled with excitement, including two nail-biting finishes that required the judges to consult photo finish technology.
In Heat 7 of the 1:04 & Faster Time Bar Class, a photo finish was needed to separate Darico Clarke, driving Rockeyed Optimist, and Teshi Zuill, driving SomeGoldSomeWhere. Both ponies crossed the line in 1:03&2, but Clarke was ultimately declared the winner after a close examination of the photo finish.
The drama continued in the very next race, the 1:04&1-1:05&1 Time Bar Class, where another photo finish was required. Colin Mello, driving ItsAllAboutMe, and Jashun Young, driving Holy Grail, both clocked a time of 1:06&0. After a tense wait, Mello was declared the winner.
The day's racing action provided a fitting end to the season, showcasing the speed and skill of Bermuda's harness ponies and their drivers. The photo finishes added an extra layer of excitement, highlighting the close competition within the sport.
