Wendy Arndt & Ken Whelihan, IslandStats.com The Bermuda Equestrian Federation is delighted to share that local equestrians will have the opportunity to train with two esteemed coaches, Ken Whelihan, Assistant Director of Riding and Senior Trainer of Ethel Walker School located in Connecticut and Wendy Arndt, Owner and Operator of Team I.E.C. in South Carolina.
Whilst this will be the first occasion for Trainer Whelihan to host clinics in Bermuda, Wendy Arndt regularly attends our Island to provide consistent training to local riders of all ages. Under her tutelage, several riders have travelled to the USA to compete in overseas competitions.
The clinics will be held from September 10th - 16th. Most of them will be held at the National Equestrian Center.
Whelihan grew up in an avid equestrian family in New England, Ken Whelihan enjoyed participating in a variety of equestrian disciplines including, Eventing, Fox Hunting as well as endless hours of hacking in the countryside.
Whelihan, attended and rode for UMass in Intercollegiate Horse Show Association’s (IHSA) competitions During college, he worked at an international jumper sales barn managed by two-time Puissance record holder Barney Ward. Over the years, Whelihan, has worked for numerous Olympians, include George Morris, Anne Kursinki, Peter Leone to name just a few. Whelihan, himself, qualified and competed in the U.S. selection trials for the 1992 Barcelona Games.
Whelihan has held a “R” Judge License for more than 30 years. He has enjoyed judging numerous FINALS as well as prestigious competitions throughout the USA. In addition, to judging at national level shows, Whelihan continues to support and judge IHSA, IEA and various local level shows.
In 2023, Whelihan’s career took an exciting turn as he accepted a teaching position as the Ethel Walker School, known for its equestrian program. Whelihan students have been consistently successful at USA National and Regional FINALS.
Arndt started her equestrian journey as a child and started competitive riding in 1970.
In addition to riding with her family, Arndt spent several years at Nimrod Farm located in Connecticut under the tutelage of trainer Ronny Mutch.
Coach Arndt has enjoyed teaching at all levels - from flat work through to Grand Prix. She has conducted clinics in the USA, Germany, South America and Bermuda. She has taught the Venezuelan Young Riders’ summer program for three years, and served as a USA Judge for the Young Riders competition held in Buenos Aries.
For more than 40 years, Arndt has operated TEAM IEC Boot Camps at her South Carolina home farm during school holidays. Her international program incorporates gaining horseshow and cross-country experience to list just a few. Arndt has hosted clinics with renowned clinicians such as George Morris, Diane Carney, Ken Whelihan, Casey Mason for the benefit of her students of varying equestrian skill levels.
