 Keely Carter - Gold IslandStats.com Bermuda’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community was well represented at the 2026 Ontario Open International Jiu-Jitsu Championships, with athletes from Aries Sports Center and BDA BJJ delivering resilient and competitive performances across youth and adult divisions.
Aries Sports Center fielded a youth team of four competitors on Saturday, achieving impressive results highlighted by a gold medal, a bronze medal, and strong performances from first-time competitors. Keely Carter led the team with a composed and technical display to secure first place. Alexis-Kennedy Higgins earned a third-place finish, demonstrating resilience in a competitive bracket.
First-time competitors also made a notable impact. Doniro secured a submission victory in his opening match, while Zion Chapman gained valuable experience in his debut, reflecting the program’s continued development of emerging athletes.
On Sunday, BDA BJJ sent a team of six adult competitors who competed across multiple divisions against strong international opposition. The team earned one silver and two bronze medals, underscoring both podium success and continued progress at higher levels of competition.
Head Coach Roberto Carneiro led by example, capturing second place in a highly competitive division, highlighted by a decisive submission victory. Trevor Smith and Cyril H. Whitter III each secured third-place finishes in their respective divisions, competing in the Master 1 super heavyweight and Master 2 lightweight categories.
Additional competitors Patrick Chapman, Jackson Chin, and Amani Wears gained valuable experience in deep and competitive brackets, each contributing to the team’s overall performance through hard-fought matches.
