BFA & BCB Face Coaching Crossroads as Era Ends

IslandStats.com
Bermuda’s national sporting landscape is at a defining crossroads as both the Bermuda Cricket Board and the Bermuda Football Association navigate high-profile leadership vacancies and administrative friction.

The Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) continues to face scrutiny over its national program following a controversial start to 2026. In January, the board signaled a shift in philosophy, opting for a specialized coaching panel instead of a single head coach. However, the rollout was marred by administrative confusion.

While BCB President Lloyd Smith initially announced a four-man technical group to lead a 25-man squad, the plan immediately faltered when two of the named coaches publicly denied reaching any agreement with the board.

In the wake of the fallout, the BCB’s defensive posture of Donald Trump style behaviour drew criticism for targeting local media platform islandstats.com for something they announced. Despite the internal friction, the board received a temporary reprieve when the North America Cup, originally slated for early April in the Cayman Islands, was rescheduled to September.

While high-performance coach Andre Coley has been drafted in to liaise with the program, the search for a permanent national coach remains unresolved as the island prepares to host the ICC T20 World Cup Americas Sub-Regional Qualifier in June.

The Bermuda Football Association (BFA) is similarly searching for stability after the senior men’s national team and head coach Michael Findlay mutually parted ways on March 15th. Findlay, who took charge in August 2023, departed after guiding Bermuda to the final round of World Cup qualifying for the first time. The BFA has officially begun the interview process to select his successor, with Technical Development Director Maurice Lowe overseeing the program in the interim.

The vacancy at the helm of the men's team is now compounded by a historic departure from the women's program. Naquita Robinson officially stepped down as Senior Women's National Team Head Coach following Saturday’s breathless 5-3 comeback victory over Grenada at the Flora Duffy South Field Stadium.

Robinson, the architect of the modern era of women’s football on the island for 13 years, saw her side overturn a three-goal deficit in her final match—a performance defined by a four-goal masterclass from Keunna Dill.

As the BFA searches for replacements for both senior roles, the departure of Robinson marks the end of an era for the Bermuda Women’s National program. With the men's qualifiers and women's regional competition looming, both the BCB and BFA face a race against time to install the leadership required to steer the island's most prominent teams through their next international cycles.
