Luton Town ended a 17-year wait for silverware at Wembley as two clinical goals from Nahki Wells inspired a 3-1 comeback victory over Stockport County to lift the Vertu Trophy.
In front of a sea of over 30,000 expectant supporters dressed in orange, the Town overcame an early scare to secure their first major trophy since 2009. While Stockport proved to be resilient finalists, the quality of Jack Wilshere’s side eventually shone through in a dramatic encounter under the famous arch.
The afternoon started poorly for the Hatters when Stockport took the lead after just 11 minutes. A direct ball over the top caught the Luton defence cold, allowing Adama Sidibeh to race through. The forward’s effort bounced into the turf and skipped past veteran goalkeeper James Shea to give the underdogs a dream start.
Luton refused to panic and restored parity 10 minutes later through a moment of youthful composure. Jordan Clark spotted the intelligent run of Emilio Lawrence, who steadied himself with a delicate first touch before rifling a low shot through the legs of Corey Addai to ignite the orange end of the stadium.
The turnaround was completed five minutes before the interval. Captain Kal Naismith stepped out of defence to find Wells on the edge of the area. The experienced striker showed trademark composure to shift the ball past his marker before wrong-footing Addai with a clinical finish into the bottom corner.
The second half was a tense, nail-biting affair as Stockport pushed for a way back into the tie. Josh Stokes went agonisingly close with a shot that whistled past the upright, but Luton were indebted to Shea for preserving their lead. The goalkeeper justified his manager’s faith by pulling off a miraculous one-handed save to tip a goal-bound Stokes header onto the crossbar following an Oliver Norwood free-kick.
With 10 minutes of stoppage time added, Wells finally settled the nerves to spark bedlam in the stands. The forward controlled a loose ball in the box and fired a low reverse shot into the net to ensure the trophy would be heading back to Bedfordshire.
Away from the drama of Wembley, there were significant results for Bermudian talent elsewhere in the English pyramid. In the Sheffield and Hallamshire County Senior League, Hayden Dill proved to be the difference-maker for Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915. Dill scored the only goal of the game in the 40th minute to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bentley Village.
In the women’s game, Aaliyah Nolan helped Bradford City Women march into the League Cup semi-finals. The Bantams produced a dominant display at the Horsfall Stadium to sweep aside Handsworth with a 5-1 victory. Nolan was heavily involved in the attacking onslaught, netting her side's third goal to ensure City remain on the hunt for silverware this season.
