Lower Soars as Bermuda PGA Championship Heats Up

Justin Lower

The Butterfield Bermuda Championship is living up to its name, with scorching scores and dramatic twists and turns at the iconic Port Royal Golf Course. As darkness halted play in the Second Round, Justin Lower emerged as the man to beat, firing back-to-back 65s to seize a commanding lead at 12-under par.

Lower, displaying the composure of a seasoned veteran, navigated the challenging course with remarkable consistency. "It felt great to follow up with another 65," he said with a confident grin. "I was solid for most of the day, though it would have been nice to sink those last two putts on 17 and 18. Still, I'm happy with where I'm at."

But the chase pack is hot on his heels. Ryan Moore, with a masterful display of precision iron play, and Robby Shelton, who unleashed a spectacular Eagle en route to a 7-under 64, are tied for second at 10-under. "It was a lot calmer today after yesterday's wind," Shelton remarked. "It was nice to take advantage of the conditions and post a low score."

Moore, reflecting on his round, added, "Today's 65 felt a little different. My swing felt good both days, but I felt like I controlled the ball better yesterday in the wind. Today was maybe a little loose with the irons."

Adding to the excitement, Sam Ryder nearly etched his name in the record books with a sensational 9-under 62, just one shot shy of the course and tournament record. He and Kevin Kisner are tied for fourth at 9-under, setting the stage for a thrilling weekend showdown.

Meanwhile, Bermuda's hopes for a local hero making the cut once again are over. Camiko Smith, after a promising First-Round 69 (tied for the lowest ever by a Bermudian in the tournament), battled valiantly in the Second Round but finished at 1-over par 143. Fellow Bermudians Eric West and Nick Jones also fought hard but fell short of the projected cut line. West ended at 3-over par 145 while Jones finished 5-over par 147.

As the sun rises over Port Royal tomorrow, the stage is set for a dramatic finish. Will Lower maintain his lead and claim the coveted title, or will one of the challengers surge ahead? Stay tuned as the battle for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship intensifies!
