Commonwealth Games Spotlight - Shianne Smith

IslandStats.com
A total of Eighteen (18) athletes will represent Bermuda at the XX Commonwealth Games being held in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23rd to August 3rd, 2014.

Today www.islandstats.com continues with the Spotlight on an athlete that will be vying for Medals at the Games. We bring you Track & Fields Shianne Smith.

Name: Shianne Smith

Date of Birth: 10-10-1985

Q. How did you first get involved in Track and Field?
A.
Seems like everyone in Bda tries it at least once, back from Telford Mile days, but I do remember back to youth days when I used to run and show off to my friends that I could "Hurdle" over trash cans

Q. Did you have a particular Track idol?
A.
Nope. I'm being the best athlete I can be for me.

Q. When did you realize that you wanted Compete Internationally?
A.
I suppose once my results proved I was of International quality. I was never one of those kids who dreamed of Olympics. I do what I do because of mere enjoyment and after many years of consistent training I've seen the progression so sitting on the couch watching competitions on TV was not an option I wanted.

Q. What would you describe as your strongest discipline? A. My main discipline: Heptathlon, 7 events 2 days. Run, Jump and Throw!

Q. Which do you feel needs the most Improvement?
A.
400 Hurdles, didn't get a chance to do any this season but next season I'll be right back at it.

Q. What one moment in your Sport to date are you most proud of?
A.
Back in 2002, @ 16 when I jumped 5.70 (18'8), to win Interschool Champs for BHS especially because this one girl was in the stands was teasing and making fun of me.

Q. What are your goals for the rest of 2014?
A.
At End of 2013 I put in a lot of work and was in great shape but had a rough 2014 start with injuries. So I hope to finish my season off with Personal best. After CWG I plan to do Decastar combined events in Talence in September then I'll end my season in November in Mexico CAC games.

Q. Can you give an insight into an average week of training for you?
A.
Training for the Heptathlon never gets old, I love it. I do each event at least once a week. Monday - Saturday unless weekend competition. Morning, 3 hours on Track and/or Gym, then early evening, Physio, recovery, biking, ice bathing, massage. Etc. 9 hour sleep then back at it again.

Q. Is this your first Commonwealth Games?
A.
Yes

Q. What do you do when you’re not taking part in Track and Field?
A.
I like to play a little Softball, Sliding into home base or tagging out at second
