The 9th Pan American Wushu Federation Congress was held during the 9th Pan American Wushu Championships in Monterrey, Mexico.
At the biennial congress Garon Wilkinson was elected to the Pan American Wushu Federation Executive Committee and Oscar Lightbourne was appointed Deputy Secretary General of Caribbean Affairs.
They were told by the Federation President and International Wushu Federation Vice-President Anthony Goh that this was a true testament of the hard work they had carried out for the development of Wushu in the region over the years.
Wilkinson co-founded the Bermuda Sanshou Association (BSA) along with Reuben Bean in 2005 and it was then that Oscar Lightbourne was appointed Technical Committee Chairman of the Association.
BSA competed in the first Pan American Championships back in 2006 at the 6th Pan American Wushu Championships in Toronto and their first World Championships in 2007 in Beijing, China.
It was during the International Wushu Federation Congress during the Beijing Championships that Bermuda was recognized as an official member of the International Wushu Federation.
Bermuda has competed at every world championship since then with their biggest accomplishment to date being Jermal Woolridge’s Bronze Medal performance at the 11th World Wushu Championships held in Ankara, Turkey in 2011.
During the Mexico Championships, Lightbourne took part in the judges course and also judged the san shou (san da) competition.
This is the second time that Lightbourne has served as a judge at the Pan American Championships with the first being in 2008 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Wilkinson currently serves as President and Head Coach of the Bermuda Sanshou Association.
