The Hon. Derrick V. Burgess, JP, MP Minister of Works and Engineering, alongside Elvin James, JP, MP Minister of the Environment & Sports, Terry Lister JP, MP, Minister of Energy, Telecommunications & E-Commerce and Senator Marc Bean Junior Minister of the Environment & Sports were on hand to watch the - DEMOLITION OF SOMERSET BRIDGE RECREATION CLUB.
Burgess said, “ “I am joined by my colleagues, Ministers James and Lister, as we commence the demolition of Somerset Bridge Recreation Club, a building that has been of considerable importance to the west end community for generations”.
“But the building has become an eyesore in recent years, posing danger to players who use it and to the general public. The facility has become dilapidated and woefully inadequate. The Government has taken the decision that it would be far more practical and cost effective to demolish it rather than to attempt renovation.
“As Minister with responsibility for all of Government buildings, I wish to say that the replacement of Somerset Bridge Recreation Club is just one example of our commitment to improve the quality of all public buildings – our schools, office buildings, residences and other structures owned by Government. The process will be a long and expensive one. Not everything can be done at once, but the Government recognizes the importance of providing for our citizens, our young people and senior citizens in particular, buildings that are safe, clean and attractive.
