Bermudian international duo Andrew Armstrong and Xahvi DeRoza both played their part as USL League Two heavyweights FC Motown secured a clinical 3-1 victory over Staten Island ASC Pre-Professional.
The fixture, played out at Wagner College, saw the New Jersey-based outfit assert their tactical dominance right from the opening whistle to maintain their strong early-season momentum in the Metropolitan Division.
FC Motown’s high-pressing system paid immediate dividends, leaving the Staten Island backline completely unsettled. The visitors breached the host’s defense almost immediately, finding the back of the net to open the scoring in just the 6th minute of play.
Before the hosts could even formulate a structural response, the Bermudians left their definitive stamp on the match. Turning over possession deep in the attacking third, 20-year-old Dayton Flyers forward Andrew Armstrong showcased his clinical predatory instincts.
Armstrong ghosted past his marker in the 9th minute to fire home a superb, low strike, doubling Motown's advantage and snapping a brief individual scoring drought. The clinical multi-goal cushion allowed the visitors to cleanly dictate the tempo, heading into the halftime interval holding a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Hoping to manage player workloads ahead of a frantic summer schedule, the Motown coaching staff opted for structural changes at the break, with the goalscoring Armstrong replaced ahead of the second half.
Staten Island mounted a spirited mid-game resurgence to pull a goal back, but any thoughts of a dramatic comeback were neutralized when newly signed Bermudian midfielder Xahvi DeRoza was introduced into the engine room.
Entering the fray in the 73rd minute following his decorated freshman campaign with the University of New Hampshire, the America East All-Rookie selection injected immediate stability and tactical maturity.
DeRoza’s precise distribution and structural awareness allowed Motown to completely regain control of the midfield lines. A late insurance goal sealed the comprehensive 3-1 scoreline, ensuring the Mid-Atlantic prospects head back across the state line with a thoroughly deserved three points in the bag.
