Somerset Eagles 0 Somerset Trojans 1
The Somerset Trojans claimed local bragging rights this evening, as Rio Russell’s second-half strike secured a narrow 1-0 victory over the Somerset Eagles in the Bermuda Football Association’s Under-23 Division.
Staged at Bernard Park, the contest—affectionately dubbed the "Battle of Somerset"—lived up to its billing as a physical and tactically engrossing affair, with both sides refusing to yield an inch in a scoreless first half.
The opening 45 minutes saw a high-intensity battle in the middle of the park, as the two West End rivals cancelled each other out. The Eagles’ defensive shape proved difficult to break down, while the Trojans’ backline remained disciplined in the face of several pacy counter-attacks. Despite a handful of half-chances at either end, neither goalkeeper was truly tested before the whistle, leaving the match finely poised at 0-0.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with both squads maintaining a high tempo despite the humid conditions. As the game entered its final quarter, it appeared destined for a stalemate until the deadlock was finally broken in the 71st minute.
Rio Russell proved to be the difference-maker, showcasing sharp movement in the area to find the back of the net and ignite celebrations on the Trojans' bench. The Eagles pushed forward in the closing stages in search of a late equalizer, but the Trojans held firm to ensure the points stayed with the men in blue and red.
