Bermuda’s Kaden Hopkins endured a punishing afternoon in the saddle as the 35th edition of the Boucle de l'Artois lived up to its reputation as one of the most attritional one-day races on the European calendar.
Hopkins, lining up for the Atom 6 Bikes - Cycleur de Luxe - Auto Stroo Continental squad, was part of a determined field that set off from Thélus for the 190km trek toward Fruges. However, the rolling terrain of northern France and a series of high-speed incidents ensured that nearly 40% of the peloton would fail to reach the finish line.
The race was marred by a significant crash after just 42km. Occurring on a fast, straight downhill section, the pile-up sent several riders to the tarmac, with early medical reports confirming a grim tally of broken collarbones and fractured fingers among the pack.
While it remains unconfirmed whether Hopkins was directly involved in the mid-race carnage, the Bermudian was ultimately among the 62 riders forced to record a DNF (Did Not Finish). It was a day where survival was the primary objective, as only 99 of the original starters successfully navigated the wind and technical descents to cross the line in Fruges.
At the sharp end of the race, Ceriel Desal, representing the Soudal Quick-Step Devo Team, proved to be the class of the field. Desal navigated the chaos with tactical precision, eventually breaking away to claim a hard-fought victory in a time of 4:13:00.
For Hopkins and his Continental teammates, the focus now shifts toward recovery and assessment. Following the reports of widespread injuries within the peloton, the island's cycling community awaits further updates on Hopkins’ condition and whether the grueling nature of the French roads has left a lasting physical mark on his European campaign.
