In a test of precision and mental fortitude, Will Haddrell emerged victorious, navigating the challenging par-three layout to claim the title at even par.
Haddrell set the pace during a commanding opening eighteen holes, carding a two-under-par 52. His first round was a masterclass in consistency, featuring four birdies and twelve pars against just two bogeys. However, as the coastal winds typical of the Fairmont Southampton property began to freshen, the second round proved a far more grueling affair. Haddrell remained resilient, battling through five bogeys but balancing the card with three crucial birdies to post a two-over-par 56 and secure the clubhouse lead.
The battle for the podium was a tightly contested affair, with defending Order of Merit champion Kenny Leseur pushing the leader until the final green. Leseur finished just one stroke adrift at one-over par for the tournament. His performance was defined by a steady hand, recording two birdies in his opening round followed by a more aggressive three-birdie showing in the afternoon. Despite his efforts to close the gap, three bogeys in each round ultimately left him in the runner-up spot.
Scott Roy rounded out the top three, finishing the major at two-over par. Representing the host club, Roy utilized his local knowledge to fire three birdies in each of his rounds. While he matched the champion’s birdie count in the final session, five bogeys in the mounting afternoon pressure saw him settle for third place. The result provides a significant shake-up to the early season standings, with the double Order of Merit points awarded for this major set to play a pivotal role in the race for the tour crown.
