Bermuda's Paralympian Jessica Lewis has continued a remarkable performance at the Canadian Track & Field Championships in Ottawa by winning the gold medal in the Women's 100m Wheelchair final.
Lewis, a T53 competitor, put on a powerful display of sprinting, crossing the line in a winning time of 16.63 seconds to secure the top spot on the podium. This final time was even faster than her impressive preliminary heat performance.
Earlier in the day, Lewis had demonstrated her dominant form by winning Heat 1 with a blistering time of 16.79 seconds. This was the fastest of all the qualifiers, putting her in an excellent position to challenge for gold. The second-fastest qualifier was her T54 competitor and training partner Nandini Sharma, who won Heat 2 with a time of 17.29 seconds.
In the final, Lewis got a solid start and held off a strong challenge from Sharma, who finished in second with a time of 17.00 seconds. Brooke Perepeluk rounded out the podium, taking third with a time of 25.33 seconds.
Speaking to www.islandstats.com after her victory, Lewis expressed her delight at the result and the experience of competing alongside her training partner.
“I’m pretty happy with the race, it’s always great to go faster in a final than the prelim," Lewis said. "I always love competing here because I get to line up with Nandini, my training partner who is a T54 so we always have a great time and push each other.”
The gold medal in the 100m adds to the silver she won in the 400m Wheelchair final, making for a highly successful and rewarding championship campaign for the Bermudian Paralympian.
