The WER Joell Tennis Stadium was electric as the Inaugural Pickleball National Championships reached its thrilling climax. Imani Phillips and Gavin Manders emerged as the queens and kings of the court, claiming the coveted titles of Female and Male Singles National Champions.
Phillips displayed exceptional skill and composure, defeating Melisa Judd in straight games with a scoreline of 11-7, 11-9. Her powerful serves and deft touch at the net proved too much for Judd to handle.
In the Men's Final, Manders battled past Tariq Simons in a hard-fought contest. After securing the first game 11-6, Manders faced a determined comeback from Simons, but ultimately prevailed 12-10 in a nail-biting tiebreaker.
The excitement didn't end there, as both Manders and Phillips went on to achieve Double victories on the day. Phillips, partnering with Matt Dragonetti, captured the 4.0 Mixed Doubles title after a thrilling three-set battle against Tom and Patricia Mills. The dynamic duo fought back from a first-set deficit to win 7-11, 11-7, 11-0.
Manders, teaming up with Mike Way, showcased his versatility by claiming the 4.0 Men's Doubles crown. They overcame a tough challenge from Ryann Matchem and Tom Mills, winning 11-7, 8-11, 11-5 in a match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.
The inaugural Pickleball National Championships marked a significant milestone for the sport in Bermuda. With thrilling matches and impressive displays of skill, the tournament showcased the growing popularity and competitive spirit of Pickleball on the island.
