After falling short in his defense of the road world title in Zürich a week ago, Mathieu van der Poel from the Netherlands stamped his authority at the UCI Gravel World Championships by winning the Elite Men’s Title with a time of 4:41.23, van der Poel he dropped breakaway companion Florian Vermeersch from Belgium on the final lap of the circuit in Leuven.
Vermeersch was second in 4:42.26, and Quinten Hermans from Belgium was third in 4:45.10.
Conor White competed in the 182 km race which turned into a tactical showdown between Van der Poel and the Belgians’ numerical advantage. White would finish 114th overall, clocking a time of 5:07.39.
