It was a family affair during the Garden State Track Club’s (GSTC) East Coast Relays and Last Chance Invitational at the Thomas Edison State Park.
Father Terrance Armstrong, as well as his sons Nathan and Andrew Armstrong all competed on the day.
Nathan Armstrong competed in the Men’s 1600 Meter Run Open race, he would clock a winning time of 4:18.61, Nathan, would complete the first 800m 2:14, he then dropped a 2:04 (64/60) over the last 800m for a new Personal Best and solid performance.
And then this happened, Andrew Armstrong challenged his father Terrance who is a three-time Bermuda Day Half Marathon Derby winner in the 800m.
Andrew who probably has only run an 800m a handful of times with a best time of 2:38, laid down the challenge to his father stating he will not only beat me in the 800m, but he can run under 2:20.
Andrew did both, the race saw the pair neck and neck at the 400m (68), but with 300m to go, Terrance Armstrong put in a surge to pass Andrew, Terrance was looking to put in another push with 200m to go, but to his surprise, Andrew goes with him and not only runs a Personal Best, but he out kicks Terrance at the finish.
Andrew Armstrong finished 46th with a time of 2:17.20, while Terrance Armstrong clocked 2:17.73 to finish 47th.
