Trey Mallory and his UNC Wilmington Men's Tennis teammates improved to 2 - 0 on its five-match homestand with a 4 - 3 win over regional rival Coastal Carolina at the UNCW courts. Playing in cloudy, cool conditions, the defending Colonial Athletic Association champions evened their record at 2-2 with the win.
UNCW claimed the doubles point in dramatic fashion when the No. 1 tandem of Davide Innocenti and Reece Falck slipped past Coastal's Diego Giraldo and Federico Garnier in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5), and then captured the first three singles matches off the court to clinch the match early.
Unfortunately, Mallory and Dillon Gooch went down in the number three Doubles spot 6-2 to Steve Mundt, and Carlos Berna Ruiz.
Freshman Mallory got things going in Singles when he cruised past Coastal's Daiki Tanabe, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 6 position.
