Daniel Phillips has begun his first Under 18 ITF Europe Tournament competing in the J4 Antalya Tournament in Turkey.
Phillips took to the court for his First Round Qualifier against Guney Ege Cetin from Turkey.
Phillips would win the first set 6 – 3, he would then win the second set 6 – 3.
Bermudian tennis player Sheila Gomez was there to cheer for Bermuda.
www.islandstats.com asked Gomez her thoughts on Phillips' performance, “What I liked the most about Phillips, was his calm temperament. He is a real fighter and looked fearless. His forehand was amazing at opening up the court and keeping his opponent on the defensive. Once he gets stronger on the backhand side he will be a force to deal with.”
“I enjoyed the match, continued Gomez, “But I want to add, my observation is that he has to work more on his movement and his backhand. His opponent was hitting mostly to his backhand because it was obviously the weaker side. But his opponent made lots of unforced errors as well.
To me, improving his footwork would be a big plus because sometimes he was slow in his taking off, and one more thing, he needs to work on his backhand down the line.”
