More than 450 elite athletes from 58 countries have descended upon Switzerland for the highly anticipated World Para Athletics Grand Prix. Serving as the crucial fourth stop of the global season, the prestigious meet has brought together 297 men and 157 women representing every continent, all vying for international glory and crucial ranking points.
Among the star-studded field, Bermuda Paralympian Jessica Lewis produced an absolute masterclass of power and endurance in the T53 Women’s 200m Dash.
While local Swiss favorite Catherine Debrunner utilized her home-track advantage to storm to victory in a blistering 26.44 seconds, it was Lewis who captured the headlines with a truly historic performance just behind her.
Lewis crossed the line in second place to claim a magnificent silver medal, stopping the clock at a spectacular personal-best time of 27.98 seconds.
Her phenomenal effort completely shattered the long-standing Americas Region record of 28.93 seconds, which had been held by Jessica Galli of the United States since 2012. Lewis's milestone mark represents a massive leap forward for the Bermudian star, showcasing the immense tactical and physical form she has carried into the European circuit.
The exceptionally fast heat left the rest of the world-class field trailing in the wake of the top two. Hamide Dogangun of Turkey rounded out the podium positions, showing excellent determination to cross the line in 28.30 seconds to take a well-deserved bronze.
However, the night firmly belonged to Debrunner’s clinical victory and Lewis's record-breaking display, a result that sends a clear warning shot to the rest of the world ahead of the upcoming international championships.
