Outerbridge Shatters Records CARIFTA Games get Underway

IslandStats.com
The 53rd CARIFTA Games exploded into life at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium in Grenada, with 18-year-old sensation Miles Outerbridge delivering a historic performance that has sent shockwaves through the regional sprinting community.

On a scorching opening morning in St. George’s, Outerbridge etched his name into the annals of Bermudian sporting history during the Under-20 Boys 100m preliminaries. Blasting out of the blocks with clinical precision, the youngster stopped the clock in a staggering 10.29 seconds—comfortably the fastest qualifying time of the session.

In one fell swoop, Outerbridge shattered the long-standing Bermuda National Junior Record of 10.54, previously held by Kyle Webb since 2014. Perhaps even more remarkably, his time was just 0.02 seconds shy of the Senior National Record, a mark set exactly thirty years ago by current National Coach DeVon Bean.

The momentum in the sprint lanes continued in the Under-17 Boys 400m, where Zydon Lightbourne Furbert secured his place in the "A" Final. Following a disciplined lap of the track, Furbert crossed the line in 49.32, the fifth-fastest time overall, to keep himself firmly in the hunt for a podium finish.

In the 100m dashes, Amara Samuels produced a sharp 11.97 in the Under-17 Girls preliminaries to finish 11th, while Arima Turner battled through a stacked Under-20 field to clock 12.73, ending her morning in 17th position overall.

Over the one-lap distance, Kelise Wade showed impressive grit in the Under-17 Girls 400m, navigating the morning heat to record a 59.08 and finish 16th in a high-caliber field.

Away from the track, the field events provided Bermuda's first major result in the throwing circle. Competing in the Under-20 Girls Javelin, Tatiana Sousa demonstrated remarkable consistency across her series.

Sousa found her rhythm on her third attempt, launching the 600g spear to a top mark of 39.46m. The distance earned her a credible sixth-place finish, providing a solid foundation for the Bermudian field contingent as the games progress.

As the afternoon session beckons, all eyes remain on the 100m finals. With Outerbridge now established as the man to beat and Furbert ready for his 400m showdown, the Gombey Warriors have signaled their intent to make the 53rd CARIFTA Games a landmark event for the island's rising stars.
