The opening day of the Senior School Track and Field Championships at the Dame Flora Duffy South Field was defined by historic breakthroughs, as two long-standing middle-distance records were swept aside under the afternoon sun.
Brooklyn Myers provided the first major headline in the Under-16 Girls' 3,000 meters. The Bermuda High School student produced a clinical performance to stop the clock at 11:19.68, shattering a 22-year-old record of 11:32 previously held by the stadium's namesake, Dame Flora Duffy.
The momentum continued just minutes later in the Under-16 Boys' equivalent, where Sanchez Smith of Saltus Grammar carved his own name into the record books. Smith crossed the line in 9:34.44, eclipsing the previous mark of 9:39 established by Cameron Creighton back in 2010.
In the Over-16 Boys' 3,000 meters, a tactical battle between Warwick Academy teammates saw Gianluca Bortoli produce a late, decisive surge to overcome Jackson Langley, taking Gold in 9:13.50. Meanwhile, the Under-16 Girls' race saw a dominant display from Saltus Grammar’s Jaada Grant, who secured victory by over a minute with a time of 12:40.08.
The field events saw a spread of talent across the island's schools.
In the Under-16 Division, Gold medals were claimed by Kenzie Lawrence of Saltus in the Triple Jump, Maya Williams-Johnson from The Berkeley Institute in the Shot Put, and BHS thrower Rachel Kelly in the Discus.
The Over-16 Girls' Division was largely a story of Berkeley dominance, as Haley Trott took the Shot Put Title, Latavia Hayward claimed the High Jump, and Amari Graham secured the Triple Jump. Tatiana Sousa of Warwick Academy provided the resistance to the Berkeley sweep by winning the Discus.
Chaz Edmead emerged as the day's only double individual winner, with the Saltus Grammar student claiming Gold in both the High Jump and Triple Jump in the Under-16 Boys' Division.
Other notable field successes included Jacob Furtado of Berkeley in the Shot Put and A’Jhi Smith, who secured CedarBridge Academy’s first Gold of the meet in the Discus.
In the Over-16 Boys' field events, Saltus Triple Jumper Saezjhor Dent was victorious, while Berkeley students Davont Smith-Richardson and Jahir Smith-Mora took the top spots in the Shot Put and Discus respectively.
As the championships head into the final day on Friday evening, The Berkeley Institute has established a formidable lead in the overall standings. They sit at the summit with 225 points, well ahead of Saltus Grammar on 163.
The Berkeley Girls' team holds a comfortable cushion with 111 points compared to BHS in second with 68, while the Boys' division remains a much tighter affair, with Berkeley leading Saltus by just 14 points.
