Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, the Hon. Tinee Furbert, JP, MP, and Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, the Hon. Owen Darrell, JP, MP, congratulate Team Special Olympics Bermuda on their commendable performance at the IBF Para World Championships in Hong Kong, which ended on January 21, 2025. Competing against elite international athletes, the team demonstrated resilience, determination, and sportsmanship. The Bermuda team comprising Jayvyn Iris, Teven Graham, Alshauntae Symonds, and Ciara Bell was led by head coach Chandra Lee Bascome, with support from assistant coach Juanita Easton, team medic Chris Cunningham, and national director Karen Woollery. Despite facing illness and injury, the athletes gave an inspiring performance. In the mixed competition, Bermuda secured a respectable sixth-place finish. In the singles events, Symonds and Bell placed 19th and 20th, respectively, while Iris finished 27th in the men’s competition. Minister Furbert said, "Our Special Olympics athletes continue to make Bermuda proud with their resilience and passion. Competing on the world stage requires immense dedication, and despite challenges, they showcased incredible determination. We celebrate their achievements and the invaluable support from their coaches and staff." Minister Darrell echoed these sentiments, by saying, "Team Bermuda’s performance at the IBF Para World Championships is a testament to their hard work and perseverance. Their achievements in Hong Kong highlight the strength of our Special Olympics programme, and we remain committed to supporting these exceptional athletes in their future endeavours." The Bermuda delegation was the only regular Special Olympics team in the competition, competing against top-tier international athletes. The experience gained at the championships will undoubtedly strengthen the team’s future performances and inspire greater participation in the sport.
