The usually idyllic Port Royal Golf Course transformed into a beast today, as Mostly cloudy with occasional showers, with winds blowing North-North West at 18-22 mph, gusting to 32 mph battered the 120 golfers vying for the coveted Butterfield Bermuda Championship title. This wasn't your typical island paradise, this was survival golf at its finest, a test of grit and determination where only the truly tough could thrive.
As darkness descended on the course, play was suspended with a handful of players still battling the elements. But amidst the chaos, two names rose to the top: Justin Lower and Hayden Springer, both carding impressive 6-under par 65’s to seize the clubhouse lead.
Lower, a man with a proven track record in Bermuda (including a top 10 finish in 2022), looked unflappable in the face of the storm. He navigated the treacherous conditions with a Bogey-free round, sinking six Birdies with the precision of a seasoned pro. "It was brutal out there," Lower admitted with a grin, "I am Proud of my Round. The wind, I mean, it's difficult, it makes it difficult, kind of slows everyone down. Yeah, it's just sometimes it kind of lays down maybe 5 to 10 miles an hour and the next thing you know a minute later it's 25 to 30 and you don't really know when it's coming."
Springer, a newcomer to this tournament, showed no signs of rookie jitters. He attacked the course with fearless abandon, carding an Eagle and five Birdies to match Lower's score. "This is my first time in Bermuda," Springer said, "and I'm loving the challenge. The weather definitely adds an extra layer of excitement. I'm just trying to embrace the conditions and play my game."
But the drama didn't stop there. Patrick Rodgers, looking to continue his strong Bermuda form after a 4th place finish in 2021 and a tie for 3rd in 2022, mounted a late charge with a Bogey-free 5-under par 66. He caught fire on the back nine, reeling off four consecutive Birdies to put himself firmly in contention.
Meanwhile, the Bermudian contingent faced an uphill battle against both the weather and the fierce competition. Camiko Smith, Nick Jones, and Eric West will all need to dig deep when they return to complete their first rounds in the morning. The home crowd will be cheering them on as they fight to make the cut and keep their championship hopes alive.
With the second round set to tee off tomorrow morning, the stage is set for a thrilling weekend of golf. Who will conquer the challenging conditions and claim the coveted title? Stay tuned as the battle for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship intensifies!
