The Bermuda Junior Cycling Team returned to action as they competed in the Junior Caribbean Championship Road Races under brutally hot conditions.
Boys Juvenile Race:
With temperatures soaring and the race starting at 10:30 a.m., the conditions were unforgiving. The race was intense from the start, with powerhouse teams like Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, and Martinique launching relentless attacks. By the second lap, a Puerto Rico rider managed to break away from the field, executing a solo effort that saw him take the win after maintaining his lead for the remainder of the race.
Despite being dropped by the main field, our Bermuda riders, Andrew Thomas and Zachery Moniz, continued to race with determination, gaining valuable experience against some of the strongest junior cyclists in the Caribbean.
Junior Female Race:
In the junior female race, Charlotte Millington faced tough competition, with rival teams fielding multiple riders. Millington stayed with the lead group and even managed to break away at one point, only to be reeled back in by the pack. The race culminated in a sprint finish, with Guadeloupe taking the win and Millington finishing a commendable 5th place, clocking 2:06:23.
Female Juvenile Race:
Skye Ferguson competed in the Female Juvenile race, battling hard to stay with the main pack. Although she lost contact early, she showed true grit by continuing to race to the finish line.
Team manager Darren Glasford stated, “This year's Championship provided invaluable experience for our young athletes, who will take the lessons learned and aim to improve on their performances in future competitions".
