Tyler Smith completed the Funchal ETU Sprint Triathlon European Cup Elite Men race on the island of Madeira, Portugal and finished 29th with a time of 57:00.
Italy’s Delian Stateff clocked a winning time of 54:33.
This was Smith's final big race of the season and was required to make him eligible for the Commonwealth Games.
Smith said, “It was one of the hardest races he'd ever done. A full field of 64 Elite Men, many of whom race the WTS and World Cup circuit.”
“It was a warm day and a tough course with a large hill that had to be climbed on each of the 3 bike laps”, continued Smith.
Smith was 16th out of the water of the 750m swim with a time of 9:26, he was right on the heels of his Leeds Triathlon Centre compatriot and 6th place finisher Jack Willis.
He then covered the 20km Bike course with a time of 28:38.
Smith tried leading the second chase pack on the bike but blew up on his last lap and ended up getting dropped shortly before T2.
Smith had an adequate run of 17:14 for the 5km course which enabled him to stay in the top 30 and within 5% of the winners time and therefore earn valuable ITU points.
