Montverde Academy produced a stunning team performance to capture the FHSAA girls’ district cross country championship, spearheaded by a landmark maiden victory for Lyla McMillen.
In a dominant display at the Sand Hill Scout Reservation in Brooksville, the Eagles reclaimed their spot at the summit of the district standings, capturing their first girls' team title since 2020.
Leading the charge was junior McMillen, whose years of consistency and progress culminated in a career-first individual victory. A steadfast presence in the Montverde lineup since her middle school days, the 11th-grader navigated the challenging terrain to finish first in a 77-runner field, crossing the line in 19 minutes 54.30 seconds.
McMillen was heavily supported at the front by her teammates, ensuring a comprehensive victory for the Eagles in the nine-team competition. Amaris Munya secured a podium finish, clinching third place overall in 20:13.76, while Angelica Wolfe placed sixth in 21:36.50 to give Montverde three runners inside the top six.
The triumph marks a significant return to the top for the MVA girls' program, highlighting their depth and front-running pedigree on the district stage.
