Hodgkins & Ravens Stage Stunning 40-point Comeback

IslandStats.com
The UBCOB Ravens produced an extraordinary second-half turnaround, overcoming a 25-point deficit and early disciplinary chaos to claim a thrilling 40-25 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds.

With five Canadian national team players returning from victory over the United States in Japan and filtering into both line-ups, the clash at the University of British Columbia delivered high-calibre rugby underpinned by breathless momentum shifts.

UBC dominated the opening quarter, exploiting Ravens indiscipline to build a commanding lead. After Joe Locke was sent to the sin bin for an inadvertent head knock, Elijah Palov sliced through midfield and released Stephen Webb under the posts to spark a 10-0 advantage inside 15 minutes.

Matters worsened dramatically for the visitors when Don Carson and Caleb Whitelaw were shown yellow cards in quick succession, leaving the Ravens temporarily down to 13 men. UBC took full advantage: a close-range forwards try, Cody Nhanala's break setting up Webb's second, and a penalty pushed the hosts into an apparently unassailable 25-0 lead.

Although UBC fullback Max McGavern picked up a yellow of his own just before the interval, the Ravens were unable to strike back before the break.

The restart brought an entirely different contest. Reverting to direct forward carries, disciplined set-piece execution, and territorial kicking, the Ravens dismantled the hosts' advantage.

A maul try in the left corner opened their account before Bermudian international Jamin Hodgkins took control of the contest. Hodgkins delivered a pinpoint miss-pass to put Locke over, before a clever angled kick from a penalty mark found Josiah Morra for a third score, slashing the deficit to 25-21 by the hour mark.

McGavern's second yellow card for a deliberate knock-on reduced UBC to 14 men permanently, opening the floodgates for three more Ravens tries. Lucas Rumball's quick-tap penalty launched an expansive move finished by hooker Louis Kassapian, followed by Brian Ndirangu powering over from a rolling maul.

A chaotic passage concluded the scoring when Locke and Morra combined off a blocked kick to send Morra over in the corner. Hodgkins, who had slotted five consecutive conversions right down the middle, missed only his final attempt to seal a memorable 40-25 triumph.
