The Bermuda National Athletics Association Cross Country IRun Bermuda Series launched in fine style as competitors took to the Arboretum under bright and sunny skies.
Favourable conditions greeted the field for the opening round of the campaign, where a mix of experienced distance runners and emerging junior talent set an early benchmark on the grass trails.
In the mixed 17-and-over three-mile contest, Tobiah Goodchild produced an impressive performance to lead the men across the line. Competing in the 17 to 19 age category, Goodchild stopped the clock in 20 minutes 6.66 seconds to take top honours in his division.
The women's three-mile events delivered strong front-running displays across the senior age groups. Melat Tirfe, also known as Mae, dictated proceedings in the 20 to 39 bracket to take first place in 22 minutes 30.78 seconds. In the 40 to 49 classification, Dem Salter secured victory after completing the three-mile distance in a composed 24 minutes 30.34 seconds.
The younger competitors also produced sharp contests over the shorter layout in the men's 14 to 16 two-mile run. Sanchez Smith set a blistering pace at the head of the field, surging clear to take first place in 11 minutes 10.86 seconds.
The battle for the remaining podium positions proved closely fought, with Nicolas Caines claiming second spot in 11 minutes 47.83 seconds, narrowly edging Rowan Halle who crossed just behind in third with a time of 11 minutes 48.41 seconds.
