Jake Smith and Dem Salter have been crowned the men’s and women’s champions following a clinical display of middle-distance running at the annual PHC 1 Mile Run and Walk.
On a day that celebrated both elite speed and community spirit, the streets belonged to Smith, who dominated the men's field to finish nearly a full minute clear of his nearest rivals.
From the starting gun, Jake Smith established a relentless pace that the rest of the field simply could not match. He crossed the line in a commanding 5:49, leaving the battle for the remaining podium spots to the chasing pack.
Chefton Hall secured a hard-fought second place in 6:58, narrowly fending off Sajan Harvey, who rounded out the top three just five seconds later with a time of 7:03.
The women’s race was a more tactical affair, with Dem Salter proving her class to take the title. Finishing 11th overall, Salter stopped the clock in 7:59 to secure the gold.
She was followed onto the podium by Carmen D’Urzo, who finished 23rd overall in 8:55, while Tamika Miranda claimed the third-place spot just three seconds behind in 8:58.
The event once again served as a vital showcase for Bermuda's rising athletic talent, with the school divisions producing some of the fastest times of the afternoon.
Senior Schools: Timothy Pearman was the standout in the senior boys' category, clocking an impressive 6:38. In the senior girls' division, the highly-rated Jaeda Grant delivered a massive performance, finishing 7th overall in a blistering 7:50.
Middle Schools: Nicolás Gómez Caines showed remarkable maturity to take the middle school boys' title in 6:23—a time that saw him finish well ahead of many senior competitors. The middle school girls' crown went to Ella Metschnabel, who finished 6th in her division with a time of 9:17.
The results underscore the depth of talent currently moving through the island's youth ranks, providing a fitting finale to another successful year for the PHC-hosted classic.
