The Botanical Gardens was a scene of both smiles and tears as the next generation of Bermudian distance runners gathered for the KPMG Round the Grounds Junior Running Races. The day began with the youngest competitors in the four-year-old category and concluded with a high-stakes finale featuring the teenage elite in the thirteen to sixteen age group.
Lucas Ferreira and Tammy Richardson-Augustus were the standout performers in the premier mile event, being crowned the male and female champions of the thirteen to sixteen years old category. Ferreira displayed a clinical finishing kick to stop the clock at 5:33.61, while Richardson-Augustus secured the female title by finishing second overall in a time of 5:37.37.
In the eleven to twelve years old mile, Evelyn Fahy delivered one of the most dominant performances of the afternoon. Fahy was the first athlete across the line regardless of gender, recording a rapid winning time of 5:19.42. Joshua Cann claimed the male title in the same age bracket, finishing behind Fahy with a time of 6:09.55.
The competition remained fierce in the nine to ten years old mile division. Nolan Horrobin emerged victorious in the boys' race, leading the field home in 5:26.14. He was followed by Tru Dillas in second place with a time of 5:33.68, while Emilio Roberts Pitcher secured the final spot on the podium after being clocked at 5:36.13.
In the girls' nine to ten years old category, Kamari Brooks-Gibbons claimed the gold with a well-paced run of 6:02.32. Freya Dunkle earned the silver medal in 6:11.65, finishing just ahead of Liliana Corbett, who completed the podium with a third-place time of 6:17.37. The event once again highlighted the depth of young athletic talent on the island as families and supporters cheered the competitors through the challenging garden course.
