The St. George’s Colts, guided by coach Drewonde Bascome, have claimed the prestigious Dudley Eve Championship, defeating the Devonshire Cougars, coached by Mark Mills, with a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the final at the Devonshire Recreation Club. The match featured a fascinating sideline battle between the two coaches, who share a history of working together in the FC Bascome programme.
The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when the St. George’s Colts took the lead. A free-kick just outside the box was bent around the wall, and although the Devonshire Cougars goalkeeper got to it, the ball was not collected cleanly. Zachary McGuire was quick to react, managing to bundle the ball over the line to give the Colts a 1-0 advantage which they held until the half-time whistle.
The lead was doubled in the 68th minute when Jarazinho Bassett was on hand to score from close range after the Cougars goalkeeper made an initial save. The goal made the score 2-0 and gave the Colts a significant cushion.
The Cougars, whose starting lineup included Chazz Knight, Zari Simmons, Jahzi Wilson Butterfield, and Domico Coddington, pushed hard for a comeback. They pulled a goal back in the 81st minute when substitute Charmari Burns was able to head the ball into the back of the net after the St. George’s Colts goalkeeper punched the ball out.
Despite a late surge for the equalizer, the St. George’s Colts defence stood firm to claim the 2-1 victory and the trophy.
