Daniel Phillips experienced a day of mixed fortunes at the 2025 ITA Division I Men's Southern Regional Championships, falling in a dramatic singles match but securing a win in the doubles competition.
Phillips, representing Tulane University, faced a tough opponent in Billy Blaydes from Auburn University in a singles match that went the distance.
The contest proved to be a three-set thriller. Blaydes edged a tight first set via a tie-break, winning 7-6. Phillips immediately responded, fighting back to level the match by taking the second set 7-5.
However, the momentum shifted decisively in the final set, with Blaydes finding his form to shut out the Bermudian 6-0, bringing Phillips' singles run to an end.
Despite the singles loss, Phillips and his doubles partner, Hady Kordy, kept their hopes alive by advancing in the Doubles draw.
The Tulane duo showcased excellent teamwork and composure to defeat the Auburn pairing of Jake Kennedy and Amirkhamza Nasridinov with a score of 8-5 in their second match of the tournament.
The victory sees Phillips and Kordy progress further in the doubles regional draw, with a place at the ITA National Fall Championships still within reach.
