The Word of Life 5K Run was contested in challenging rainy and windy conditions today, but the weather failed to deter the efforts of the island's runners, with Philip Woollins and Lucy Sowerby emerging as the respective Male and Female Champions.
In the men's race, Woollins handled the adverse conditions best, clocking a winning time of 18 minutes, 22 seconds . He was followed closely by Nathaniel Maurice, who crossed the line second in 18:49, with Miles Smith rounding out the men's podium in third place, recording 18:57.
The women’s competition was led by Sowerby, who was the 8th runner overall to cross the finish line, recording a strong winning time of 22:26.
Akilah Reid was the second female finisher, placing 16th overall with a time of 25:39, while Melissa Gilmar secured the third spot on the female podium, finishing 22nd overall in 29:32.
The race featured a popular handicap element known as 'The Chase!', which saw reigning Bermuda Day Half Marathon champion Sean Trott allow the main field a five-minute head start.
Trott, one of the island's premier distance runners, showcased his true pace by passing all but eight runners, finishing 9th overall in a gun time of 22:29. Had he started alongside the field, Trott's effort would have resulted in a clear victory with a formidable actual running time of 17:29.
Despite the difficult weather, the charity event proved a rousing success, highlighting both the quality and grit of Bermuda’s running community.
