Bermuda's Under-14 Boys' Tennis team concluded their participation in the WJT (World Junior Tennis) North Central America & Caribbean Pre-Qualifying Tournament in the Dominican Republic, finishing eighth after a 3-0 defeat to Barbados on the final day.
This tournament marked the end of a demanding period for Bermuda's young tennis players, following their 14th-place finish at the BJKCJ DCJ North/Central America & Caribbean Pre-Qualifying Junior Davis Cup in Guatemala City.
In their final match against Barbados, the Bermuda team faced a tough challenge. Manuel Maldonado was the first to take to the court, facing Travis Licorish. Maldonado battled hard but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-1, giving Barbados a 1-0 lead.
Barbados then doubled their advantage when Zane Kirton defeated Raul Maldonado in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
The doubles match saw the Bermuda pair of Raul Maldonado and Trystan Thompson make a promising start, winning the first set 6-4. However, the Barbadian duo of Kirton and Cruz Thornton fought back strongly, winning the next two sets 6-0, 10-2, securing a 3-0 victory for Barbados.
Despite the final day's defeat, the Bermuda team's participation in the WJT Pre-Qualifying Tournament represents a valuable learning experience. Competing against strong opposition in back-to-back tournaments has provided the young players with crucial exposure and opportunities for development.
The experience gained in both Guatemala City and the Dominican Republic will undoubtedly benefit the players as they continue their tennis journey. The Bermuda Tennis Association will be looking to build on these experiences and further develop junior tennis in the country.
