Daniel Phillips and his Arizona State Men's Tennis teammates suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to No. 7 ranked University of San Diego (USD). Despite a strong showing in singles play, the Sun Devils were unable to overcome a crucial doubles point loss.
The match hinged on the doubles competition. Had Arizona State secured the doubles point after a tiebreak on court three, their three consecutive singles victories would have been enough to clinch the win. However, Phillips and his doubles partner Tanner Povey suffered their first defeat of the season, falling 6-4 to Blake Kasday and Saviryan Danilov.
In singles action, Phillips battled hard against Neo Niedner but ultimately fell in a three-set thriller. After losing the first set 7-5, Phillips rallied to win the second set 6-3. However, Niedner proved too strong in the deciding set, winning 6-3 to secure the victory for USD.
Despite the narrow loss, Phillips and his Arizona State teammates demonstrated their competitive spirit against a top-ranked opponent. They will look to learn from this experience and bounce back in their upcoming matches.
