The 2025 Lindo's to Lindo's Road Race, a popular walk and fundraiser for the Bermuda Diabetes Association (BDA), will be held on Sunday, March 9th, under the theme "These Feet are Made for Walking."
This annual event, which raised $26,000 in 2024 for its 25th anniversary, is the BDA's biggest fundraiser. The charity is tackling the significant challenge of diabetes in Bermuda, where an estimated 13% of the population suffers from the disease, a figure that is expected to have risen since 2014. Furthermore, the BDA estimates that one in three Bermudians has prediabetes, putting them at risk of developing type 2 diabetes within five years. Alarmingly, as many as eight out of nine people with prediabetes may be unaware of their condition.
This year's theme, "These Feet are Made for Walking," emphasizes the importance of physical activity in preventing and managing diabetes. Studies, such as the Diabetes Prevention Programme, have shown that at least 150 minutes of weekly physical activity, like walking, can significantly reduce the risk of developing diabetes.
The event features a 10k competitive run, a 4-mile competitive walk, and a 4-mile fun run/walk, all starting at 8:30 am at Lindo's Family Foods in Warwick and finishing at Lindo's Market Devonshire. Entry costs $35.
Volunteers are still needed to support the event, and those interested can sign up online to be a Road Marshal or help at a Water Stop.
Funds raised will support the BDA's community education programs about diabetes prevention and treatment, as well as its Client Assistance Programme (CAP), which provides financial assistance for diabetes management and counselling.
Participants can collect their race numbers and t-shirts on Saturday, March 8th, between 8:30 am and 12:30 pm at the Jack King Building in the Botanical Gardens. The first 1,000 participants to collect their race packets will receive a goodie bag.
Zach Moniz, Lindo's Family Foods Manager, emphasized the importance of the event: "We are honored that this event not only celebrates community spirit but also emphasizes the life-changing benefits of walking – or jogging. It’s such a simple, yet powerful way to improve your health and mood. Together, we can inspire healthier lifestyles and provide essential resources to those affected by diabetes."
Lori Rockhead, Executive Director of the BDA, expressed her gratitude for the community's support: "This event not only unites us in our shared commitment to health but also ensures that the Bermuda Diabetes Association can continue to provide vital care and education to those affected by diabetes."
The event is organized by the Mid Atlantic Athletic Club and sanctioned by the Bermuda National Athletics Association, with support from various sponsors.
Registration is open until Saturday, March 8th, and can be completed online at runsignup.com/Race/BM/Warwick/LindostoLindos. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in various age categories for both runners and walkers.
