The Commonwealth Games is set to blend history and innovation in its athletics programme for the 2026 Glasgow Games. In a nod to the past, the iconic mile race will return to the schedule after a 60-year absence, while the mixed 4x400-meter Relay will make its Games debut, highlighting a focus on inclusivity.
Taking place from July 23rd to August 2nd, 2026, the Games will feature 10 sports across four venues. Athletics will be centred at Scotstoun Stadium, the stage for the mile's revival. The mile hasn't been contested at the Commonwealth Games since 1966.
This decision is a clear tribute to the legendary "Miracle Mile" at the 1954 Vancouver Games. That race saw Roger Bannister and John Landy, the only two men to have broken the four-minute mile at the time, deliver a truly historic sporting moment.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe expressed his support for the move: "The mile is a cornerstone of Commonwealth athletics, easy to understand, just four laps of the track, and carrying a cultural significance that spans generations. Seeing it return in Glasgow 2026 is a true recognition."
The Glasgow Games will also be a landmark event for para athletics. For the first time, jumping, throwing, and track events will be fully integrated into the official programme. The addition of the mixed 4x400m relay further emphasizes the Games' commitment to inclusion, bringing a new dimension of speed, strategy, and gender balance to the track.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow look set to create a new and memorable chapter in the history of Commonwealth athletics by combining respect for tradition with a forward-thinking approach to competition.
