The Bermuda Olympic Association (“BOA”) Athletes Commission members recently organized an election for the next term of the Olympic phase until Los Angeles 2028.
To be an eligible candidate the athletes must have competed in the last 8 years, or 3 Olympic Games at the CAC, Commonwealth Games, Pan Am Games, the Olympic Games and/or be on the BOA Elite Athlete as of the start of the election period. The voting athletes came from this same pool of members. The BOA Executive shared, “We would like to thank members Jessica Lewis, Caitlin Conyers, Tyler Butterfield and Chair Julian Fletcher, for their service as advocates for Bermuda’s athletes.”
The goal of the AC during this election cycle, which began in December 2024, was to find candidates that represent a diverse background in sport and select a gender-equal committee that best represents our Bermudian athletes’. There were 9 athletes nominated to represent the voice of the athletes within the Olympic movement. Each of the 9 nominees are committed representatives in their sport and comes from a wide range of experience in sports and sports administration.
The Election process started on December 16th, with the nomination of athletes, and ended on January 24th, 2025. There was a total of 30 responses, and the 5 elected members were Dage Minors, Athletics (28 votes), Tyler Smith, Triathlon (27 votes), Emma Harvey, Swimming (19 votes), Adriana Penruddocke, Sailing (19 votes) and Alyssa De Silva, Hockey (12 votes).
The remaining results were Sakari Famous, Athletics (11 votes), Lisa Leblanc, Volleyball (9 votes), Taahira Butterfield, Athletics (9 votes) and Jack Harvey, Swimming (9 votes).
The newly composed BOA AC can be further compiled as 3 Olympians, 1 incumbent member, 5 current athletes, 2 Males, and 3 Females.
The role of the Athletes Commission “AC” is to advise and make recommendations to the BOA on all matters related to Bermudian Athletes. The Athletes Commission represents the views and opinions of the athletes to ensure their voice is heard within the BOA and the Olympic Movement.
The BOA AC maintains communication with the IOC Athlete Commission (international) and Pan Am Sports Athletes Commission (regional) to create opportunities for our Bermudian athletes, consults with current athletes to provide transparency and support and makes related recommendations within the BOA to provide feedback on projects to the General Assembly.
