The sophomore duo of Asia Hollis and Laila Haraj-Sai won the "C" Draw Championship to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) Women's Tennis team at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament co-hosted by Smith College and Amherst College in Northampton and Amherst, Mass., respectively.
The tournament pits a pair of players from each school to play a doubles match and two singles matches with the winner advancing after winning the best of three points.
Hollis and Haraj-Sai combined to win three separate pods during the day to capture the title on the Smith campus in Northampton.
The Lyon pair began the day with a dominant 8-1 doubles win over the Emerson College pairing of junior Jayden Beverly and first year Sidra Sundberg. Wheaton swept through singles play as well. Hollis cruised with a 6-1, 6-1 effort over Sundberg, while Haraj-Sai also won in straight sets over Beverly, 6-1, 6-4.
The Lyon tandem advanced to the draw's Semi-Finals and pulled out a singles and a doubles win over Gordon College to play for the Championship. Hollis and Haraj-Sai put together an 8-3 triumph over sophomore Chloe Hanley and first year Gianna Hallam. Hollis did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 showing against Halam, but Hanley picked up the point for the Fighting Scots with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Haraj-Sai.
Wheaton drew Smith College in the final, but an injury to one of the Pioneers gave the Lyons a single point as well as a doubles point for the win. First year Tabitha Bastress won in singles action over Haraj-Sai, 8-2, to gain Smith's only point of the match.
