The Bermuda Basketball Association’s Under-17 Men's National Select began competing in Newmarket, Ontario in Canada.
The Bermuda Under 17 team played a double header falling twice.
Game 1 was a good indicator of the competition Bermuda would face as they went down 46 – 41 to the Aurora Spartans.
Game 1 was close throughout despite the many turnovers, some unforced errors. Bermuda had a little trouble with the pace and pressure on the ball, but the effort on defense kept the game close.
Bermuda trailed early in the falling 14-3 in the 1st quarter. Guard play was a key to the deficit as poor decision-making led to numerous turnovers which lead to easy points for the defense.
Bermuda was led by Jacinto Saints with 15 points, while Cameron Basden added 14 points.
Game 2, saw Bermuda go down 65 – 46 to Richmond, Bermuda came out with a better sense of urgency early in the game, but shots would not go down and the other team scored easily in transition.
In both games, Bermuda regrouped with intense team defense in the second half which fueled their offense, especially in the second game where they cut a 20 point deficit down to 7.
Despite the losses, players feel good about their progress understanding the need to be players actually played with more consistent in their effort and execution. With players now realizing how competitive basketball is here, the hope us that it will assist them in raising their game.
