John Chung held his 2023 World Cup Open Martial Arts Competition at the Hilton Washington Dulles Hotel. Bermuda had one representative competing with fellow martial artists from all over the US, Australia, and Canada.
Michael Burgess of Kobayashi Okinawan School of Karate-Do competed in the 12 to 14 Age Group.
Burgess was accompanied by his mom and Andrea McKey.
Burgess won the Traditional Weapons, finishing in 3rd place in the Traditional Kata and he was also 3rd in Sparring.
In the Kata Division, there were 11 strong competitors. The Sparring Division was hotly contested with Burgess winning his first two rounds before losing by a narrow margin to the overall winner.
McKey was a standby judge and also assisted Burgess as needed.
