Following his performance in the 2018 Finn Australian Championships that saw him finish 6th Rockal Evans speaking with www.islandstats.com summed up the final day saying, “The first race on the final day was a battle with me and the 5th place guy trading positions the whole race till the finale leg with him get the best of me and finishing 2 spots ahead of me. That meant going into the last race he was 4 point ahead of me. I knew going into the last race I had to beat him with 4 boats between us.”
Evans went on to say, “The start of the last race went and I was 2 spots in front of him on the first leg of 4 in the race, at the end of leg 2 he had gained a spot and was right behind me. The 3rd leg I said to myself the only way I was to get boats between us is if I sailed him to the wrong side of the course. The whole of the 3rd leg I tacked on top of him to try to show him down and takes his wind. At the top of leg 3 my job of slowing him down and getting boats between us had worked and we had 4 boat between us at the start of leg 4 going to the finish! Once I finished I waited at the finish to see the outcome and only to see him pass 2 boat rite at the finish line it was a nail biting moment for me.”
“Happy with my result, was a really well run regatta in really hard conditions, big wind shifts and lots of current running over the races course from the mouth of the nearby river,” concluded Evans.
