Clear-cut chances were few and far between on a bitterly cold evening at Old Trafford, until Scott McTominay seized his opportunity with the 97th-minute winner.

Hartlepool took the lead in the 11th minute when the ball deflected into the path of Luke Armstrong who lashed his effort into the back of the net from the edge of the box.
The lead was doubled in the 57th minute when David Ferguson curled a free-kick from the angle into the back of the net.
