Portsmouth threatened much more in the second half but couldn’t capitalize before Martin picked out the top corner with a stunning finish inside the 83rd minute.
Wells who started the match on the bench was called into action in the 65th minute to replace Hakeeb Adelakun.
Bentley’s strong-arm then kept out substitute Jordy Hiwula-Mayifuila deep in stoppage time as Bristol City held on to progress in the cup and start 2021 with a win.
