Vashun Blanchette – President Somerset Cricket Club and Neil Paynter President St. George’s Cricket Club have jointly released a statement, "Somerset Cricket Club (SCC) and St. George’s Cricket Club (SGCC) wish to advise the public that the 2020 Cup Match Classic has been cancelled.
The annual event was due to be held at the grounds of Somerset Cricket Club on Thursday July 30th and Friday July 31st, 2020.
This decision has been taken in light of the Covid-19 global pandemic and following consideration of all relevant information and advice from key stakeholders.
Somerset Cricket Club and St. George's Cricket Club deeply understand the historic and cultural significance of the mid-summer Classic. The game which began as a friendly match played between two lodges has been played each year since 1902 without interruption. This cricket match grew increasingly popular as an annual event between Somerset Cricket Club and St. George’s Cricket Club and a two-day public holiday was enacted in 1947.
After much deliberation, it has been concluded that the health and safety of spectators, club officials and players is of greatest significance during these uncertain and unprecedented times. The Cup Match Classic is one of the most festive times of the year and we encourage all fans of Cup Match to celebrate the two days with friends and family while reflecting on its origins and adhering to any mandated health guidelines.
Somerset Cricket Club and St. George's Cricket Club further wish to acknowledge the endeavors of all Government officials and essential workers over the past few months and highlight the collective spirit of Bermudians and our international residents during these times.
In closing, both Somerset Cricket Club and St. George's Cricket Club wish to thank all fans and sponsors of Cup Match for their continued support over the years and look forward to 2021 with great excitement and anticipation.
