Grant & Gills Youth Grinds Out Victory in Five-Goal Thriller

IslandStats.com
Nayan Grant and his Gillingham Academy teammates bounced back from recent frustration, edging out a resilient Stevenage side 3-2 to secure three vital points.

The result comes just days after the young Gills suffered a narrow defeat by the same scoreline against Bromley, a match that saw the Kent outfit fall agonizingly short despite a spirited second-half fightback. This time, however, Gillingham demonstrated the necessary game management to ensure they came out on the right side of a five-goal contest.

In a match defined by tactical discipline and clinical efficiency in the final third, Gillingham established an early foothold. The standout performer was Sullivan Booth, whose movement and anticipation caused constant problems for the Stevenage backline. Booth was the beneficiary of some intricate build-up play, finding the net twice to provide the bedrock for the Gillingham victory.

While Booth provided the clinical edge, Louie Dayal also maintained his impressive run of form. Dayal, who recently made headlines with a treble against Bromley earlier this month, once again proved his worth by scoring Gillingham's third of the afternoon. His ability to find space in the box proved decisive as Stevenage threatened to claw their way back into the game late on.

Bermudian international Grant anchored the defensive effort, showcasing the grit and concentration required to stifle a strong Stevenage attack during a frantic final ten minutes. Despite the visitors finding the net twice to set up a nervous finale, the Gillingham defensive unit held firm to preserve the narrow advantage.

The victory marks a significant psychological boost for the Academy squad, proving their ability to learn from the Bromley setback and close out tight fixtures against top-tier opposition. With momentum back on their side, the young Gills now look forward to a home fixture against Cambridge United this weekend as they continue their push up the youth standings.

Late Heartbreak for Grant & Gillingham in Five-Goal Thriller

IslandStats.com
Nayan Grant and his Gillingham Academy teammates suffered a narrow 3 – 2 defeat on the road as a resilient Bromley side managed to hold off a spirited second-half fightback.

Despite goals from Grant and Freddie Carruthers, the young Gills were unable to find the decisive equalizer in a contest that showcased the clinical nature of the youth divisions.

Bromley established an early foothold in the match, testing the Gillingham backline with direct running and high-intensity pressing. The hosts capitalized on their early pressure to build a lead, forcing Gillingham to chase the game from the opening quarter.

Gillingham’s response was led by the industrious Nayan Grant. The forward, who has been a consistent threat for the Academy this season, found the net with a composed finish to keep the visitors in contention. Gillingham's momentum continued to build when Freddie Carruthers struck, momentarily shifting the tactical balance and putting the Bromley defense under significant duress.

However, Bromley’s ability to transition quickly proved the difference. Despite a series of late set-pieces and a frantic final ten minutes from the Gillingham attack, the hosts maintained their discipline to secure all three points.

The result marks a frustrating afternoon for the Gills' coaching staff, who will look to address the defensive lapses that allowed Bromley to regain control. Gillingham will now turn their attention to a home fixture next week, where they will be eager to bounce back and translate their attacking output into a winning result.

Somerset and Bascome Among the Winners in Kappa Classic

IslandStats.com
The 2026 Kappa Classic concluded in spectacular fashion at the National Sports Centre North Field, as the island’s premier youth football showpiece overcame a week of turbulent weather to crown its newest champions.

Widely regarded as the largest and most prestigious youth tournament on the local sporting calendar, the event once again transformed the North Field into a hub of high-stakes competition and community spirit. Despite significant meteorological interruptions earlier in the schedule, the tournament organizers worked tirelessly to ensure every bracket reached its conclusion, culminating in a final day of high-quality football.

In the flagship Under 15 Boys final, the Somerset Trojans Red produced a dominant defensive display to secure a 2-0 victory over the PHC Zebras. The Trojans’ clinical finishing proved to be the difference in a tactical battle that saw them capitalize on two second-half openings to silence the Zebras’ faithful. However, PHC found redemption in the Under 15 Girls division, where the Lady Zebras mirrored that scoreline with a 2-0 triumph over BFLA Blacks to secure the championship trophy.

FC Bascome enjoyed a particularly fruitful afternoon, securing two major titles in the boys' brackets. Their Under 13 squad showcased exceptional technical skill to overcome PHC Zebras Blacks with a 2-0 win, while the Under 11 FC Bascome Blue side edged out Warwick Football Academy Ajax 2-1 in what was arguably the most competitive match of the day. Warwick Football Academy did not leave empty-handed, however, as their Under 13 Girls Independiente side secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over BFLA Blacks to claim their divisional title.

The younger age groups provided plenty of goals and excitement for the capacity crowd. The Boulevard Blazers were the standout performers in the Under 7 Boys category, delivering a ruthless 5-0 victory over X-Roads Black. In the Under 9 Boys division, Devonshire Colts Orange claimed the silverware with a 3-1 win over Somerset Trojans Red, while the BFLA Blacks celebrated a narrow 1-0 victory over PHC Lady Zebras to take the Under 9 Girls crown.

As the final whistles blew across the North Field, the 2026 edition of the Kappa Classic stood as a testament to the resilience of the local sporting community. With hundreds of young athletes having showcased their talents over the course of the week, the tournament once again served its purpose as a vital pipeline for the next generation of Bermudian footballing talent.

U9 Boys: Dandy Town Hornets Browns dominated Group E, while PHC Zebras Blacks surged in Group F with a 6-0 win over Devonshire Colts White.
U9 Girls (Group B): Defenses were harder to break down here, with both PHC Lady Zebras and BFLA Blacks securing narrow 1-0 victories over BHSFC Blue and WFA Napoli respectively.

Goals Galore as Kappa Classic Intensity Rises

IslandStats.com
The 2026 Kappa Classic continued its tradition of high-energy youth football as the second day of action saw more than 1,000 young athletes descend upon the National Sports Center and Devonshire Recreation Club.

With the group stages in full swing, the focus shifted from opening-day nerves to clinical finishing, with several teams establishing themselves as early favorites for silverware.

At the North Field, the Under 7 and Under 9 divisions provided some of the most lopsided and exciting results of the day.

Dandy Town Hornets Browns 8-0 X-Roads Purple (U9 Boys): The Browns produced the most dominant display of the morning in Group E. Their relentless attacking pressure overwhelmed X-Roads, with the Hornets finding the net eight times in a masterclass of youth finishing.

Warwick Football Academy Inter 5-0 BHS FC Yellow (U9 Girls): Warwick’s girls’ program continues to shine. In Group A, the Inter side showcased exceptional passing and movement to secure a comfortable five-goal victory, keeping a vital clean sheet in the process.

PHC Zebras Blacks 6-0 Devonshire Colts White (U9 Boys): The Zebras signaled their intent in Group F with a physical and fast-paced performance. Their six-goal haul reinforces PHC’s status as a perennial powerhouse in the Kappa ranks.

Devonshire Colts Black 4-2 Hamilton Parish YSP (U7 Boys): In a tighter Group C encounter, the Colts showed great resilience to outlast Hamilton Parish in a six-goal thriller, proving that even at the Under 7 level, the competitive spirit is alive and well.

Over at the "Rec," the older age groups faced off in matches defined by defensive structure and narrow margins.

PHC Zebras 5-0 Southampton Rangers (U15 Boys): The Zebras’ Under 15 squad mirrored the success of their younger counterparts. In a clinical Group A performance, they put five past the Rangers, controlling the midfield from the opening whistle to the final buzzer.

BFLA Blacks 4-0 BHS FC Yellow (U13 Girls): The BFLA Blacks demonstrated why they are highly regarded in the girls' division, using a blend of speed and technical skill to sweep aside BHS FC Yellow with four unanswered goals.

Somerset Trojans Red 4-0 Dandy Town Hornets (U15 Boys): The Trojans claimed bragging rights in this storied rivalry. Somerset’s Reds were clinical in front of goal, punishing defensive errors to secure a significant four-goal cushion against the Hornets.

PHC Zebras 1-0 Dandy Stars (U15 Girls): Perhaps the most tactical match of the day took place in Group A. The Zebras and the Dandy Stars were locked in a stalemate for much of the game before the Zebras found the solitary goal needed to edge out their rivals in a tense, high-stakes encounter.

With the preliminary rounds concluding, the focus now turns to the knockout stages. The atmosphere across both venues suggests that the 2026 edition is set for a grandstand finish as the island's rising stars chase regional glory.
