IslandStats.com
Fresh from capturing the doubles title in week one, American Matt Kuhar produced a ruthless opening performance as the second week of the ITF M15 Bermuda World Tennis Open got under way in Pembroke.

Qualifying action began on Monday at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium, with a competitive international field vying for places in the main singles draw.

Top-seeded qualifier Kuhar sent an emphatic statement to the field, needing little time to brush aside Canada’s Tareq Alani in a flawless 6-0, 6-0 double-bagel victory.

Compatriot Tyler Mercier also enjoyed a routine progression, seeing off Great Britain’s Nicholas Adesalu 6-2, 6-4, while American Mitchell Dobek proved equally clinical in a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over fellow countryman Danny Al Barbour.

Elsewhere, the day produced several tight, hard-fought battles decided in match tiebreaks.

American Rohan Sachdev demonstrated remarkable poise under pressure, recovering after dropping the second set to edge out Chile’s Leon Achurra Correa 7-6, 5-7, [10-5].

Brazil’s Pedro Petroski Rocha staged an even sharper comeback against American Alexander Wriedt. After dropping a tight opening set in a tiebreak, Rocha turned the match on its head with a 6-0 second-set bagel before closing out the super-tiebreak 10-3 to seal a 6-7, 6-0, [10-3] victory.

Curaçao’s Aydan Gomez Osorio safely navigated his opening encounter, defeating American Alexander Bravo 6-4, 6-2, while Israel’s Ben Chetewy Ungar dropped just two games in a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over Jonny Degroot.

Action continues on Tuesday morning as competitors battle in the tournament's 32-man main draw.
